Like every Hindu festival, the background story of Bhai Dooj is mesmerizing. According to legends, this ritual is associated with Goddess Yamuna and her brother Lord Yama who was a descendant of Lord Shunga and Sangya. It is believed that Yamuna often invited Yama to visit her home.
But, being busy with work, Yama politely declined his sister’s invitation. However, one day he surprised her by visiting his sister Yamuna’s house. This pleased Yamuna and she welcomed her brother Yama by applying a tika on his forehead and also prepared various dishes for him. After that Yamuna asked him to bless the brothers with long life on Bhai Dooj. From that day onwards this day became important in Hindu tradition.
