Chennai . The Bharatiya Janata Party, which is trying to strengthen its hold in Tamil Nadu, has suffered a major setback. Despite contesting on 27 seats under the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the party managed to win only one seat. The BJP formed an alliance with the AIADMK in April 2025 and entered the 2026 assembly elections with more seats than in 2021. On the strength of its better performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the deployment of senior leaders in key constituencies, the party hoped that it would be able to translate its organizational strength into electoral gains, however this strategy did not prove effective at the ground level. The party’s strong popularity among urban voters and youth has weakened the BJP’s support base in many constituencies. This decision has also brought the state leadership under question and the performance of key leaders is being closely scrutinized.
The defeat of senior leaders has given rise to discussions on possible organizational changes, including a reshuffle of the party’s representation in the state unit and at the Centre.
Concerns have also been raised within the party over the impact of the renewed alliance with the AIADMK and there are indications that it could weaken the BJP’s path to independent growth in the state. The disconnect being felt with young voters has further increased introspection.
After the crushing defeat in the elections, BJP is now preparing for structural changes in Tamil Nadu. The defeat is expected to impact the party’s strategy ahead of the 2027 local body elections and 2029 Lok Sabha elections, as the party tries to re-consolidate its base in the changing political scenario.
