Thiruvananthapuram. Leader of Opposition V.D. Satishan on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Describing the law and order of the state as tragic, he raised the issue of torture in police custody. He ignored the corruption and scams and heard the CM a lot on adopting the “ostrich-like attitude”. Pointing to several incidents in recent weeks, Satishan said, “The police has become a source of fear, which is behaving like the loyalists of the ruling party rather than the guardian protector.”
Satishan said that the silence of the Chief Minister, who is also the Home Minister, is “unfair to the person sitting in a constitutional post”.
The Leader of Opposition warned that in the assembly session starting on Monday, the opposition will raise its words in an outspoken manner. Claimed that this is the beginning of the end of this government. He said, “By ignoring the repeated reports of cruelty and corruption, Vijayan has reduced public confidence and weakened the democratic fabric of Kerala. The end of this government has started.”
He referred to the behavior of Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists, who recently covered their heads and were produced in court with fetters in their hands. Describing this act as a stigma for democracy, he asked, “Are they a terrorist or a dreaded criminal?”
This comment by Satishan came amid reports of dissatisfaction produced within its youth branch of the CPI (M).
Sathishan said, “The Trisoor District Secretary of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) recently alleged that the district leaders have become ‘robber gangs’, they are earning profits from suspicious deals and are also interfering in police posting for commission.”
The Karunnur Cooperative Bank scam, in which the depositors lost more than Rs 400 crore, are also harassing the government. Families who saved money for surgery, weddings and homes have become destitute.
Satishan further said that the investigation of the Enforcement Directorate of the scam has been deliberately slowed down, while the victims are waiting for relief.
Meanwhile, the family of another DYFI activist has accused the police of implicating him in a false case and torturing him in custody – this charge has deepened the crisis.
