2022 can be considered a turning point in history as it witnessed a turning point in global politics, signaling the beginning of a new era. The year 2022 was dramatic in many ways. From wars to crises and rebellions, the world saw it all.

This year, bone-chilling events shaped the international relations of many countries. With so many incidents happening around the world, we have tried to cover the top 7 incidents that gave us goosebumps or brought about a change in relations between countries.

russia–ukraine war

One of the most important events of 2022 was Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia attacked Ukraine on 24 February, increasing tensions between the two countries. The invasion resulted in thousands of deaths on both sides, as well as Europe’s largest refugee crisis since World War II. An estimated 8 million people were displaced within the country by the end of May, and 7.8 million Ukrainians had fled the country by November 8, 2022. Since then, the rest of the world has been struggling to cope with price shocks, supply disruptions and food shortages, according to UNHCR.

death of queen elizabeth ii

Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning British monarch, died of old age in Scotland on September 8. Queen Elizabeth II’s reign as head of state includes the post-war recession, the transition from Empire to Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War, and the accession and exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union. With his death, his eldest son, King Charles, became the new monarch of England.

US-China tension

US Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and her delegation landed in Taiwan this year, ending speculation that it was not listed in the official itinerary of her East Asia tour. This was not the first time, as even before Pelosi’s visit was confirmed, Chinese President Xi Jinping and China’s Foreign Ministry had warned against sending any senior US government official to the island which China considers its province. The visit angered China, as they believed the US was supporting Taiwan’s de facto independence and China claimed the island as its own.

protests in iran

The rulers of the Islamic Republic of Iran faced one of the most significant challenges to its rule this year. The protests began in September, when 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was arrested for not covering her hair properly and died in police custody. Hundreds of people gathered to condemn her death and Iran’s abuses of women. The protests quickly spread across the country, with Iranians of all social, economic and ethnic backgrounds joining together.

World population crosses 8 billion

Currently, the world population is set to cross 8 billion in 2022. According to the United Nations, India is the largest contributor to this reach. India is set to surpass China as the world’s most populous country in 2023. These 8 countries will contribute most of the population growth by 2050 – Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, and United Republic of Tanzania. Let us tell you that in 1950 the world population was only 2.5 billion.

alonmasknettwitterbought

After a legal battle, billionaire Elon Musk finally bought Twitter for $44 billion in October. Billionaire Elon Musk belongs to SpaceX, and Tesla. Following the acquisition he fired CEO Parag Agarwal, CFO Ned Sehgal, and head of legal policy, trust and security, Vijaya Gadde. “The bird is free,” he tweeted as soon as he completed the acquisition.

sri lanka economic crisis

The Sri Lankan government blamed their economic crisis on the COVID-19 pandemic, which massively affected their tourism. From the middle of 2021, financial conditions started becoming difficult for them. Fuel and cooking gas became increasingly expensive and inflation was running high. The government banned imports. The World Bank has agreed to lend $600 million to Sri Lanka, and India has offered at least $1.9 billion. Even the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is discussing a possible $3bn (£2.5bn) loan.
