New Delhi: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court requesting to direct the Centre and the states to take appropriate steps to eliminate superstition, witchcraft and other similar evil practices. The petition states that there is a need for an anti-superstition and witchcraft law to eliminate unscientific practices prevalent in the society. It also requests to take steps to prevent fake saints from exploiting innocent people.

The advocate said this in the petition filed

The petition filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay has also requested the Centre and the states to take steps to develop scientific temper, humanity and a sense of inquiry among citizens in accordance with the spirit of Article 51A of the Constitution.

This article of the Constitution deals with fundamental duties. The petition states that some superstitious practices are cruel, inhuman and exploitative and there is a dire need to make laws to curb them. It also alleges that many people and organizations are converting people on a large scale by resorting to superstition and witchcraft. (Input: Bhasha)
