Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government over deaths and diseases caused by contaminated drinking water in Indore. He also questioned the credibility of the cleanliness awards and the government’s claims regarding river rejuvenation.
At least four people died and more than 140 fell ill after drinking contaminated water in Bhagirathpura area of Indore. Reacting to the incident, the SP chief said such a tragedy in a city that is repeatedly promoted as India’s cleanest city is shocking.
He said, “We have heard many times that some cities in the country have received many awards for cleanliness. Indore is one such city, yet the condition of drinking water is so bad that people drinking it have died and many others are falling ill.”
Launching a sweeping attack on the BJP, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister alleged that the party avoids answering questions.
Yadav said, “When the BJP was asked about this, the way they behaved instead of answering is unimaginable. These are the same people who had promised to clean Mother Ganga.”
He further said that polluted rivers are a reflection of failed governance. He said, “If someone drinks the water of Mother Ganga, he will fall ill, and if someone takes a bath in the Yamuna in Delhi, he will start itching.”
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya met the affected families and assured them of full government assistance. He said that about 198 people have been admitted to the hospital, most of whom are in stable condition.
“Nobody is in danger. One patient is on ventilator but out of danger,” he said. He further said that the treatment will be free and the expenses incurred so far will be reimbursed.
Regarding the death toll, Vijayvargiya said officials have confirmed four deaths, although local residents claim nine deaths.
“We will investigate it and compensation will be given accordingly,” he said, dismissing reports that the death toll had risen to 13.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ordered strict action against the culprits. Acting on his instructions, two officers were suspended and one dismissed, while a three-member committee has been formed to probe the negligence.
