Guwahati, May 14 (IANS). Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday reviewed the progress of major power sector projects, officials said. These projects include Assam Power Distribution Company Limited, Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited and Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited.
The main focus of the review meeting was to strengthen the power infrastructure of Assam and ensure uninterrupted power supply to meet the growing energy needs of the state.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister took stock of the current peak power demand situation and reviewed the existing arrangements for power supply across the state.
He directed officials of the three power companies to accelerate the ongoing projects related to thermal, solar and hydroelectric power generation as well as development of transmission and grid infrastructure.
The officials present in the meeting informed the Chief Minister about the current status of various ongoing projects across Assam. It also included measures to increase generation capacity, modernize the transmission system and reduce losses in transmission and distribution.
According to officials, special emphasis was laid on increasing power availability during peak power consumption periods, especially in rapidly growing urban areas and industrial zones.
The Chief Minister also stressed the need for timely completion of projects to avoid delays in strengthening the state’s energy network.
This review has come at a time when Assam is witnessing a steady increase in electricity consumption due to urbanization, industrial expansion and increasing demand for electricity in households.
As part of its comprehensive strategy, the government is also focusing on increasing the production of renewable energy to ensure a sustainable and reliable power supply.
Sources said that the Chief Minister directed the concerned departments to maintain better coordination among themselves for speedy completion of projects and proper utilization of resources.
He also said that the ongoing works should be regularly monitored to ensure that all the targets are accomplished within the stipulated time frame.
The Government of Assam has, in recent years, taken several initiatives to improve electricity connectivity and infrastructure in both urban and rural areas.
Officials said the ongoing projects under Assam Power Distribution Company Limited, Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited and Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited are expected to significantly increase the state’s generation, transmission and distribution capacities in the coming years.
