Guwahati, May 29 (IANS). Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya will lead the Indian delegation to Mongolia carrying the holy relics of Arahant Sariputra and Arahant Maudgalyayana, two prominent disciples of Lord Buddha. This special spiritual exhibition aims to further strengthen the age-old cultural and religious ties between India and Mongolia.
The exhibition is being organized under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and is considered an important spiritual and diplomatic initiative showcasing the shared Buddhist heritage of the two countries.
These sacred relics, preserved in the Sanchi Vihar Chaitya of the Sanchi Stupa complex in Madhya Pradesh, will be taken to Mongolia with full respect and religious rituals. These remains are associated with the UNESCO World Heritage Site Sanchi Stupa, which is considered one of the most revered centers of Buddhism.
According to the statement issued by Raj Bhavan, this initiative is being taken on the special inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Its objective is to deepen India’s historical and civilizational ties with Mongolia, considered India’s “spiritual neighbor” in the Buddhist world.
Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya will leave for Mongolia with the Indian delegation on May 30. Under his leadership the holy relics will be taken there.
This exhibition will run till 9 June 2026. During this time, thousands of devotees, Buddhist monks, researchers and religious followers from all over Mongolia will visit these sacred relics and pay homage.
According to the organisers, this event will symbolize the deep cultural ties and friendship established through Buddhism between India and Mongolia. Besides, this will also give new strength to the contact and cooperation between the people of the two countries.
Governor Acharya will return to India on June 3, while the holy relics of Lord Buddha’s disciples will remain a part of the special spiritual exhibition being held in Mongolia till June 9.
