Bengal Elections: BJP candidate Vijay Ojha wins Jorasanko seat by a margin of 5797 votes.

Kolkata, May 4 (IANS). In the exciting election contest from Jorasanko assembly seat of West Bengal, BJP candidate Vijay Ojha won, while TMC candidate Vijay Upadhyay had to face defeat. The winning candidate Vijay Ojha got a total of 52868 votes, while his nearest rival Vijay Upadhyay got 47071 votes. The victory margin was 5797 votes.

Jorasanko is a general category assembly constituency under the Kolkata North Lok Sabha constituency, located in the central part of Kolkata. It came into existence in 1951 and has participated in all the 17 assembly elections held in the state since then. This area is made up of 11 wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and is a completely urban area with no rural voters.

Congress held this seat for a long time. Congress won 11 times. All India Forward Bloc and Janata Party also got success once each in 1952 and 1977 respectively. Political equations changed after Mamata Banerjee separated from Congress and formed Trinamool Congress in 1998. Since 2001, Trinamool Congress has won this seat five consecutive times. Although many times the competition has been very close. In 2021, 50 percent voting took place on this seat, in which Vivek Gupta of Trinamool Congress defeated Meena Devi Purohit of BJP by a margin of 13 percent votes. In 2016, there was 54 per cent voting, in which Smita Bakshi of Trinamool Congress defeated Rahul (Biswajit) Sinha of BJP by a margin of 6 per cent votes.

The situation has been slightly different in the Lok Sabha elections. In the last three parliamentary elections, Trinamool Congress has faced challenge from BJP in this assembly constituency. In 2014, the difference was 16,482 votes, which reduced to 3,882 votes in 2019, while later it increased again to 7,401 votes. Despite this, Trinamool Congress has won all parliamentary elections since Kolkata North Lok Sabha seat was created in 2009.
