Kolkata, April 20 (IANS). Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Subhendu Adhikari, on Monday mocked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s promises to provide jobs to Kolkata-based employees of the ‘Indian Political Action Committee’ (I-PAC). The reaction came after it was learned that I-PAC has temporarily halted its operations in the state for 20 days and directed its employees at its Kolkata office to go on “short leave”.
Soon after receiving information about an email sent by I-PAC to Kolkata office employees on Sunday morning, Trinamool Congress had initially issued a statement calling it baseless. However, soon after, while addressing an election rally in Tarakeswar in Hooghly district, the Chief Minister promised jobs to the employees of I-PAC’s Kolkata office. It also claimed that he has already discussed the matter with party general secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee.
The Chief Minister said on Sunday, “The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is conducting raids, especially during elections. People from the agencies who work for us are being threatened to leave the state. You can have so many agencies working for you. So can’t we have them too? If you scare them, they will join my party and we will give them jobs. Keep this in mind that I will not let any boy remain without a job. I Spoke to Abhishek Banerjee on this matter. I want to make it clear that this is a conspiracy.”
On Monday morning, Suvendu Adhikari issued a statement on social media mocking Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s promise of jobs for I-PAC’s Kolkata office employees. He claimed that the job promises for I-PAC employees look even more ridiculous after failing to fulfill the promise of saving the jobs of “spotless teachers” who are becoming unemployed due to the multi-crore ‘school job scam’ case in West Bengal.
Adhikari said, “You (Mamata Banerjee) snatched the jobs of capable people and made one false promise after another just to save your chair. Till now no one has got their job back. Now you are promising to give jobs to those people who had actually fabricated those false promises of yours, so that you could save your chair by misleading everyone. Everyone in the country knows how capable you are in giving jobs. This is all you know.” That is by depriving capable people of their rights, selling jobs to incompetent people and then spreading a bundle of lies.”
