Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara has appointed Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) R to investigate the lapses in Bengaluru Central Jail. The formation of a committee under the leadership of Hitendra was announced on Monday.
The announcement comes after a video surfaced purportedly showing prisoners enjoying special facilities like smartphones and personal television sets in their barracks in the Central Jail.
He told reporters after a high-level meeting with senior police officers that the committee includes Inspector General of Police Sandeep Patil and Superintendents of Police Amarnath Reddy and C.B. Rishinath is a member.
He said that apart from this, the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of the districts in the state where major jails are located will also be co-members of this committee.
The minister met Chief Superintendent of Bengaluru Jail K. Also announced the transfer of Suresh and suspension of Superintendent Imamsab Miyageri and Assistant Superintendent Ashok Bhajantri.
Briefing reporters, Parameshwara said, “It has been decided that from now on an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer will be in-charge of Parappana Agrahara Jail (Bengaluru).”
He said a command center would be set up in Bengaluru which would connect all the CCTV cameras of the jail.
BJP on Monday demonstrated against the lapses in Bengaluru jail.
BJP leaders who were marching to gherao the office and residence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah were taken into preventive custody.
