Ahead of the Election Commission announcing the assembly poll schedule, the Congress on Sunday launched a scathing attack, saying that since 2014, the MCC has become synonymous with “Modi’s election campaign code” which would be full of “defamation, abuse, threats, fear-mongering and spreading the virus of lies”.
The opposition party also claimed that the announcement of the election schedule “would have been given the green signal by G2 as G1 would have completed the round of inauguration, ribbon cutting, flag hoisting and inauguration”.
Congress often uses the term ‘G2’ to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, both of whom are from Gujarat.
In a post on X, Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said, “The Election Commission will announce the schedule of 2026 assembly elections today at 4 pm. It will have been given the green signal by G2, as G1 will have completed this round of inauguration, ribbon cutting, flag hoisting and inauguration.”
Ramesh said, “The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) of the Election Commission is going to be implemented soon. But since 2014, it has become synonymous with Modi’s election campaign code, which will be full of defamation, abuses, threats, fear-mongering and spreading the virus of lies.”
MCC is a set of rules agreed upon by all stakeholders during elections. Its objective is to keep election campaigning, voting and counting of votes orderly, clean and peaceful and to prevent any misuse of state machinery and finances by the ruling party.
The Election Commission will announce the dates of assembly elections in Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal and Puducherry on Sunday evening. The tenure of these assemblies is ending on different dates in May and June.
The final electoral lists of four states and the Union Territory of Puducherry have been published under the Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls (SIR).
