Guwahati, May 14 (IANS). Political rhetoric has intensified regarding the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam. Meanwhile, Assam State President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Dilip Saikia has made serious allegations against Congress. He has said that Congress is opposing this issue because of ‘appeasement and vote bank politics’.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Saikia said the proposed UCC aims to implement equal law and order for all citizens, which will promote equality and unity in the society. He claimed that this law is not against any community nor will it harm any class.
He said that the Assam unit of BJP has welcomed the government’s steps towards implementing UCC in the state. He also thanked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had talked about implementing UCC in the state before the elections. According to Saikia, the move is aimed at strengthening the concept of ‘one country, one law’.
Saikia also said that implementation of Uniform Civil Code in the country is the need of the hour, as it will promote gender equality and social justice. Giving the example of Uttarakhand, he said that there has been no major negative reaction after the implementation of UCC there.
Attacking the Congress, he alleged that the opposition party is trying to confuse the public on this issue. According to him, the politics of Congress leaders is based on dividing the society and creating distance between communities. He said that Congress has failed to understand the changing political environment in the state.
He did not take the name of any leader. But, later criticized many senior leaders including Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi. He said that Congress’s stance is completely adversarial and motivated by political gains.
Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced on Wednesday that the upcoming session of the Assembly will begin from May 21 and the state government will introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the House on May 25.
