New Delhi/Itanagar, July 14 (IANS). The Arunachal Pradesh government on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Norwegian company ‘Tidal Sail AS’ to implement a 500-kilowatt ‘River Kinetic Energy Demonstration Project’. This has paved the way for setting up India’s first ‘River Kinetic Energy Demonstration Plant’ in the north-eastern state.
An MoU was signed between the Center for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies, Government of Arunachal Pradesh and Tidal Cell AS under the India-Norway Green Partnership.
Officials in Itanagar said the project, run in collaboration with the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Innovation Norway, will showcase technology that generates electricity directly from river streams without any major civil infrastructure. It will provide environment friendly and affordable renewable energy solutions.
State Science and Technology Minister Dasanglu Pul, who was present during the signing ceremony in New Delhi, described the agreement as a milestone in Arunachal Pradesh’s clean energy transition.
He said that this partnership reflects a shared commitment towards innovation, sustainability and international cooperation. Pul said the state’s vast river systems have immense potential for renewable energy and expressed confidence that the project will strengthen energy security while ensuring environment-friendly utilization of natural resources.
He also thanked MNRE, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Royal Norwegian Embassy, Innovation Norway, Tidal Sail AS and other partner institutions for supporting this initiative.
Norway’s Ambassador to India May-Elin Steiner said Arunachal Pradesh’s river systems make it an ideal location to demonstrate river kinetic energy technology, which can complement existing renewable energy sources and enhance long-term energy security.
He said the project reflects the growing cooperation between Norway and Arunachal Pradesh in areas such as geothermal energy, geotechnical engineering and sustainable infrastructure, reaffirming Norway’s commitment to promoting green technology and knowledge sharing.
