Meghalaya: Rescue team recovers 18 bodies from illegal coal mine after explosion

NDRF, SDRF and Search and Rescue (SRT) teams of Meghalaya Fire and Emergency Services have so far recovered bodies of several people trapped in the coal mine following the explosion at Massingat in Jaintia Hills district.

According to East Jaintia Hills district ADC CP Mavkan, around 8 people have been injured in the incident. He further said that teams are continuing to search for the remaining bodies at the spot.

“We are still carrying out the operation, let me tell you briefly, we have recovered 18 bodies and shifted the injured, the total number of injured is 8, and at the moment we are still searching for the bodies trapped inside the pit,” Mavkan told ANI.

NDRF Commandant HPS Kandari said that three teams have been sent to the spot for rescue operations. This morning itself, a special team was sent to assess the situation inside the mine.

“As per information received from the local administration, 18 bodies were recovered yesterday. Our team has started the operation today. 3 teams have been deployed. In the morning, a team was sent to take stock of the situation in the mine and now we have again sent a search team,” Kandari told ANI.

NDRF DIG Operations Mohsin Shahidi said that many people are trapped inside the mine. He further said that this massive blast occurred due to dynamite explosion.

At least 18 people were killed in an explosion at a coal mine in Myensingat, Thangsko (Thangsky) area of ​​Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh per family to the families of the 18 victims who lost their lives in the Meghalaya coal mine accident.

On the East Jaintia Hills coal mine disaster in Meghalaya, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has confirmed that 18 people have lost their lives in the blast and one person has been injured who has been admitted to the Civil Hospital for treatment.
