Guwahati, May 9 (IANS). After the disappointing performance in the Assam Assembly elections, Congress has started the internal review process. Party MP and senior leader Gaurav Gogoi said on Saturday that the state leadership has taken full responsibility for the election defeat and the party high command has also been informed in this regard.
Speaking to the media after the meeting with party leaders, Gaurav Gogoi said that the results of the 2026 assembly elections were very disappointing for the Congress. He said, “I have said earlier also that we take full responsibility for this defeat. We have also informed the high command about this. Now the decision on organizational changes and further strategy has to be taken by the central leadership.”
He said that the party has started talks with former MLAs, candidates who have contested the elections and newly elected MLAs to find out the reasons for the defeat and gather feedback from the grassroots level.
“We are trying to know what is the response from people at the ground level and what improvements should be made in future,” Gogoi said.
He said Saturday’s meeting was the second phase of the review process, in which district level leaders and senior officials were called.
Gaurav Gogoi said, “For the next one month we will try to identify the real reasons for the 2026 election results.”
The Congress suffered a major setback in the Assam assembly elections, while the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) easily retained power in the state.
After the election results, discussions have intensified within the Congress regarding organizational weaknesses, strategic failures and change in leadership. According to party sources, during the review process, special attention will also be given to strengthening the booth level organization and reconnecting with the grassroots workers.
