Guwahati, February 17 (IANS). Senior leader in Assam and former APCC President Bhupen Kumar Bora has announced to leave the Congress party. This is being considered a big blow for Congress.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said senior leader and former APCC president Bhupen Kumar Bora leaving the Congress will weaken the opposition party’s strength ahead of the upcoming elections.
Sarma on Tuesday formally announced that Bora would join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on February 22 and described it as a turning point in the political picture of Assam.
Speaking to the media at Bhupen Bora’s residence, the Chief Minister said that the leader who stayed in the Congress for almost three decades and became the state president, leaving the party reflects deep underlying problems.
The Chief Minister said he would have another in-depth political discussion with Bhupen Bora on Wednesday. He also said that the allegations that Bora is a BJP agent are completely baseless and politically motivated.
He stressed that leaders with position and prestige like Bora do not resign without a serious reason, especially when they have held organizational responsibilities.
Sarma raised questions over the Congress high command’s handling of Bora’s complaints, saying his problems were not heard with sensitivity.
Without naming any particular person, he alleged that some Congress leaders were acting like landlords, cut off from ground reality and unwilling to accept accountability.
He said such internal culture repeatedly sidelined dedicated leaders, ultimately forcing them to leave.
The Chief Minister said that Bora leaving the party would have a deep impact on the credibility and morale of the Congress, as he has significant influence in the organization. He clarified that the BJP’s aim is not to create a Congress-free state, but to provide a strong and stable political alternative in the state.
