Chennai, May 8 (IANS). The path is gradually becoming clear for the formation of the C. Joseph Vijay-led Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) government in Tamil Nadu. Now the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Friday has formally extended unconditional support to TVK.
This support was expressed through a letter submitted to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar by T. Ramachandran, leader of the CPI legislature party in the Assembly.
The letter said that this decision has been taken under the instructions of the state leadership of CPI and in line with the mandate given by the public in the recently concluded assembly elections.
The letter said the CPI legislature party, which has two members, is extending its unconditional support to the TVK and its president and legislature party leader C. Joseph Vijay for the formation of the next government in the state.
The letter further said that this support is being extended in view of the results of the assembly elections held on 23 April 2026 in the state of Tamil Nadu. This is being done in the interest of stable, secular and democratic governance for the people of Tamil Nadu. The party has also urged the Governor to record this support and take forward the constitutional process related to government formation.
CPI leader D. Raja said that his party has not only extended support but also asked the Governor to invite TVK to form the government. D Raja said that CPI, CPIM and VCK have decided to support TVK for the formation of a secular government in Tamil Nadu.
This development is politically significant amid the ongoing intense negotiations and changing alliances following the fractured mandate received in the assembly elections held on April 23 in Tamil Nadu.
Results declared on 4 May resulted in a hung assembly, with TVK emerging as the largest party by winning 108 seats in the 234-member assembly. Congress had earlier supported Vijay’s party, taking the strength of the alliance to 112 seats.
With the support of CPI, a member of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, Vijay’s camp is inching closer to the majority of 118 seats required to form the government.
Political analysts believe that this move by CPI may increase pressure on other smaller parties and independent candidates to clarify their position in the rapidly changing political scenario. Meanwhile the Governor is expected to continue consultations with political parties before taking a final decision on inviting any alliance to form the government in the state.
