The party’s name first gained prominence when a controversial statement – which later went viral – surfaced. In this statement, unemployed youth as well as those who have entered professions like journalism, RTI activism and law were compared to “cockroaches” and “parasites”. However, a clarification was later issued – claiming that the statement was taken out of context – but by then, controversy had erupted on the social media platform. The youth used this word as a sarcastic weapon, and thus the “Cockroach Janata Party” was born. Almost overnight, it started trending on the internet.
