New Delhi, February 4 (IANS). Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijendra Gupta on Tuesday referred the action of Punjab Police in the Atishi video controversy to the Privilege Committee of the House for detailed investigation. He said that prima facie a case of breach of privilege and contempt of the House is made out.
Taking cognizance of the complaint filed by Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra, Gupta said the privileges committee will investigate the role of Punjab Director General of Police and Jalandhar Police Commissioner.
The case pertains to an FIR lodged by the Punjab Police on the complaint of Iqbal Singh regarding allegedly edited or doctored video clips of statements made by Atishi, leader of opposition in the Delhi Assembly, on January 6, 2026.
After considering the reply submitted by the Punjab Police and Mishra’s complaint, the Speaker concluded that the issue is directly related to the proceedings of the House, which falls within the ambit of legislative privilege.
The press release said that despite the Punjab Police being informed by the Assembly Secretariat that the Speaker and the House had taken cognizance of the matter, the FIR was registered and public statements were made alleging tampering in the Assembly proceedings.
The Speaker rejected as unsatisfactory the written explanations submitted by the Punjab DGP and Jalandhar Police Commissioner in which they had claimed that the Punjab Police had acted in accordance with law and the alleged acts were committed by persons outside the Delhi Assembly.
The press release also said that despite repeated reminders, Punjab Police failed to provide the necessary documents to the Delhi Assembly Secretariat, including copies of the complaint, FIR, report of social media expert of Punjab Police and forensic report of Punjab Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).
It further said that correspondence with the Punjab FSL Director revealed that the forensic report was shared only with the concerned police officials.
