The National Seismological Center said that earthquake tremors were felt in West Bengal and parts of the Northeast on Friday morning. An earthquake of 5.7 magnitude occurred in Narsingdi, Bangladesh.
It said the earthquake occurred 13 kilometers south-southwest of Narsingdi in the neighboring country at 10.08 am and its epicenter was at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Many people were seen taking to the streets in West Bengal and the Northeast, including Kolkata and Guwahati in Assam, as a precautionary measure.
Officials said there was no immediate information about any loss of life or property.
