Congress on Sunday said that the Election Commission has extended the deadline for Special Intensive Review (SIR) making it clear that it is impractical to complete it in a short time.

Deputy leader of Congress in Rajya Sabha Pramod Tiwari also said that one and a half year’s time should be ensured for this like it happened in the year 2003. He said that the Commission should give up its arrogance and take the process forward as per the 2003 programme.

After the all-party meeting called for the winter session of Parliament, Tiwari told reporters, ‘Opposition parties feel that if there is no discussion on SIR, it means that the government does not want Parliament to function.’ He said that by extending the deadline, it is clear that it is impractical to complete this process in such a short time. He also alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not fulfilling his responsibilities by not participating in the discussion in Parliament.

The Election Commission on Sunday extended the schedule of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of electoral rolls in nine states and three Union Territories by a week.

The draft voter list will now be published on December 16 instead of December 9, while the final voter list will be released on February 14, 2026, instead of February 7.

The Election Commission had announced the SIR in these states and union territories on October 27.
