Nicosia, May 28 (IANS). India’s Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met his Romanian counterpart Oana Toiu on Thursday on the sidelines of the informal Gymnich meeting of EU foreign ministers in Cyprus.
After the meeting, Romania’s Foreign Minister Oana Toiu wrote on social media platform
He further said, “I had a very good discussion with my Indian counterpart Dr. S. Jaishankar during the Gymnich meeting in Cyprus, which was our fourth meeting.”
The Romanian Foreign Minister also said that trade between Romania and Bulgaria is set to reach $1.2 billion in 2025, an increase of more than 20 percent compared to 2024.
“After unblocking our Joint Economic Cooperation Commission after an eight-year break, we have brought real momentum back to the relationship and investments are already accelerating,” he said.
The two Ministers also look forward to a high-level visit to Romania later this year.
They also discussed developments in the Middle East situation, including energy security, connectivity, India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
“Romania and Belarus are committed to further deepening the strategic aspect of our extended partnership,” Oana Toiu said.
Earlier, on Thursday itself, Foreign Minister S. “Had a short conversation today with Deputy PM and Foreign Minister of Poland Radosław Sikorski of Poland in Cyprus, Foreign Minister of Romania Oana-Silvia Tsoiu and Tom Berendsen of the Netherlands,” Jaishankar wrote on Twitter.
Romania is a member of the European Union and in January, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the successful conclusion of negotiations on the India-EU FTA and described the agreement as the mother of all deals.
The agreement is expected to come into force sometime in 2026. The FTA is expected to bring qualitative changes in overall strengthening of relations between the two countries in many areas.
