Kolkata, July 2 (IANS). Amid the ongoing political turmoil in West Bengal, Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee said that in the last few weeks, the West Bengal Police (STF/CID) suddenly summoned or arbitrarily detained for questioning about 25 people associated with my office or associated with me, without proper notice and in violation of basic legal safeguards.
Abhishek said that these people are being intimidated and pressured to give false statements. Their phones are being tapped and even family members (women included) are being harassed and threatened.
He said that this is the worst form of political threats. The same government whose Chief Minister was caught on camera allegedly taking bribe and against whom several CBI cases are pending, is now using government agencies to target me. Do whatever you want. I will not bow down till my last breath.
Earlier on July 1, a court in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Wednesday issued a notice to Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee. He has been asked to appear in the court so that CID officials can take his voice samples. Abhishek is accused of making statements inciting violence at an election rally and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The Judicial Magistrate of Bidhannagar Court, Salt Lake in North 24 Parganas district, has directed the Diamond Harbor MP to appear in the court by 10 am on July 8, so that CID officials can take his voice samples in the presence of the Judicial Magistrate and forensic experts.
Abhishek was to appear in the district court on Tuesday for this purpose. However, he did not appear in the district court on Tuesday as the single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court was hearing his petition challenging the district court’s previous order to collect voice samples.
