Guwahati, May 13 (IANS). Senior Assam cabinet minister and Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora on Wednesday said resolving Assam’s pending border disputes with the neighboring north-eastern states is a priority for the NDA government.
Speaking to the media, Bora said the government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made significant progress in resolving inter-state border disputes through dialogue and mutual cooperation with neighboring states. Assam has been facing border tensions for decades, causing hardship and uncertainty to the people living in the affected areas.
Bora said, “After becoming the Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma took the initiative to hold discussions with the Chief Ministers of all the North-Eastern states. He clearly said that the resolution of such disputes should be through dialogue and mutual understanding. As a result, Assam has achieved significant progress in resolving border disputes with neighboring states.”
The AGP leader said that Assam has made important agreements with Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya on many disputed areas. Regular discussions are also held with Mizoram and Nagaland on border issues and incidents in sensitive areas.
Bora acknowledged that the dispute with Nagaland remains a complex matter as part of it is pending in the Supreme Court. However, he expressed confidence that continued dialogue between neighboring states will ultimately help find a peaceful solution.
“We believe that solutions can be found through discussion and collaboration. Much progress has been made and we look forward to further progress in the years to come,” he said.
Bora also said that the people of Assam have once again reposed confidence in the NDA government and the ruling alliance will work more responsibly to meet the expectations of the public in the next five years. The government will continue to give priority to development, safeguarding the interests of Assam and welfare measures in all sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture and infrastructure.
