Ranchi, November 20 (IANS). An important hearing was held in the Jharkhand High Court on Thursday on a PIL filed regarding the poor condition of the basic facilities and treatment of patients at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, Jharkhand’s largest medical college and hospital.

The High Court has directed the Jharkhand Legal Services Authority (Jhalsa) to form a team and conduct a detailed inspection of the current condition of the hospital and file a report within 10 days.

The court said that the Jhalsa team will assess the actual situation of medicine availability, pathology services, condition of the trauma centre, drinking water, cleanliness, maintenance and other basic facilities provided to the patients.

In the matter, the applicant has also been directed to review the affidavits filed by RIMS and the State Government point by point in the light of the High Court order dated October 10, 2025 and submit its response in the form of a tabular chart.

The court said that it should be clear to what extent the reforms claimed in the RIMS system have been actually complied with in the affidavits.

A division bench of Chief Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan and Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad has fixed December 3 as the next date of hearing after the hearing.

The court has been continuously expressing concern about the poor condition of RIMS. Jharkhand’s largest multi-speciality hospital has been battling staff shortage, dilapidated infrastructure, unavailability of equipment and allegations of administrative negligence for years. Complaints of patients and media reports have also repeatedly exposed the weak system of the hospital.

Along with the suo motu cognizance regarding RIMS, a separate PIL has also been filed by social activist Jyoti Sharma, in which the demand has been raised to remove the acute shortage of doctors, nurses, technicians and Group-D employees, ensure availability of essential machines and improve the overall health facilities.
