Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay arrived in the national capital on Monday for questioning by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Karur stampede that killed 41 people during a party campaign event in September last year.
The CBI had earlier issued a notice to Vijay under Section 179 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS) and directed him to appear for investigation.
The notice was issued earlier this month, and the date of January 6 is written on the summons. The investigation pertains to the stampede that occurred during an election program of TVK on September 27, 2025 in Karur district of Tamil Nadu.
According to TVK sources, Vijay flew from Chennai to New Delhi on a chartered flight and is expected to visit the CBI headquarters later in the day to cooperate in the investigation.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had handed over the investigation of this incident to the CBI. As part of the investigation, the CBI has questioned several senior officials of TVK in New Delhi. Party leaders have handed over video footage to investigators, alleging negligence on the part of the Tamil Nadu government.
The CBI has also investigated the campaign vehicle used by Vijay during the event and the driver of the vehicle has been questioned as part of the ongoing investigation. The Karur stampede occurred during a massive political gathering, killing 41 people and injuring many others. The incident sparked widespread public outrage and prompted judicial and legal investigations.
Earlier in December, the Tamil Nadu government had also filed its counter-affidavit in the Supreme Court seeking directions to quash its decision to order a CBI probe in the Karur stampede case.
In its reply, TVK had claimed that the Tamil Nadu government’s plea (counter-affidavit) lacks concrete facts and does not state any valid reason for removing the jurisdiction of the CBI and the supervisory committee constituted by the apex court.
TVK says that many of the statements made in the counter affidavit of the state government are false and misleading. TVK further said that considering such claims would hinder the ongoing investigation and its monitoring.
