New Delhi, July 19 (IANS). Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi have written a joint letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding an independent and comprehensive investigation into the financial affairs of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. Kharge said that lakhs of devotees had donated their hard-earned money with faith, devotion and trust, and they feel cheated by this theft.

Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi wrote in their joint letter, “You are well aware of the alleged theft of thousands of crores of rupees in Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. Lakhs of devotees, who donated their hard-earned money with reverence, devotion and faith, are feeling cheated by this theft.”

Congress leaders wrote, “You had announced the formation of the Trust in Parliament on the instructions of the Supreme Court, but its members have been appointed entirely by your government. It is well known that the members of the Trust are affiliated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and organizations associated with them. Its former General Secretary (Champat Rai) was also your close associate.”

Kharge and Rahul Gandhi wrote that your silence in case of such a crime is not acceptable; It is your duty to fix accountability and ensure compensation for the loss.

“We urge you to immediately order an independent and comprehensive investigation into the financial affairs of the Trust, including the management of all offerings including cash, gold and silver. The investigation report and the accounts of the Trust should be made public so that every devotee can know how their offerings have been utilized,” the Congress president and Leader of Opposition wrote in the letter.

He also said that whoever is found guilty in the investigation, regardless of their position or influence, action should be taken against them. The letter said that the credibility of the Central Government and the Trust will depend on how transparently and promptly action is taken in this matter.
