London, July 20 (IANS). Britain is getting a new PM in the form of Andy Burnham on Monday. Earlier, Keir Starmer gave his last speech in front of supporters at ’10 Downing Street’, the official residence and office of the Prime Minister. He started it with thank you.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that he is going to meet King Charles III and submit his resignation from the post of Prime Minister. He said that his tenure has now ended.
Starmer said, “I am going to meet the King to hand in my resignation and close the chapter on my time as Prime Minister. My work is done.”
He said that in six and a half years he had completely transformed the Labor Party after its historic defeat in 2019, prepared it to face the country and led it to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election.
Starmer said, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve this great country and all of you as Prime Minister. I am confident that Britain is stronger and fairer now than it was two years ago.”
Referring to the achievements of his tenure, he said that the country’s economy has become stronger than before and public services have improved. According to him, the biggest decline in waiting period in 17 years has been recorded.
Starmer also said that efforts are being made every day to lift children out of poverty, there has been a significant reduction in immigration and Britain’s defense and security system is stronger than ever.
He claimed that Britain’s reputation has improved significantly at the international level as well.
Putting an end to the conversation, he said that now he is handing over the baton (command of the country) to Andy Burnham and assures that he will help him fully.
He said, “The changes we have made for our country and our party belong to all those who fought for them. I thank them once again today.”
Starmer also expressed his gratitude to the people of Britain and said that he got the opportunity to serve the country, it is an honor for him.
“I’m leaving in good spirits. I’m leaving with a smile and I’m proud of all we’ve accomplished together,” he said.
