Madurai, May 26 (IANS). The political atmosphere has become heated due to the violence in Kunnam in Perambalur district in Tamil Nadu. Viduthalai Chiruthigal Katchi (VCK) deputy general secretary and Tamil Nadu social justice minister Vanniarasu strongly condemned the incident, saying the state’s politics should remain civilized and democratic.

Vanniyarsu had reached Madurai airport on Tuesday on his way from Chennai to his home district Virudhunagar. Here the VCK workers gave him a warm welcome. Supporters presented him shawls, flower garlands and bouquets. However, during the welcome, there was a slight commotion for some time in the race to honor him.

Talking to the media, Vanniarasu, while referring to the Kunnam violence, said that this incident is completely unacceptable and should not have happened. He told that earlier a protest was announced at the district level, but later the party leadership considered it not necessary and directed to withdraw it. However, some workers were unaware of this changed decision and reached the venue.

Vanniarasu alleged that DMK workers there pelted stones at VCK workers and behaved extremely violently. He said that the party chief Thol. Thirumavalavan has always been against violence in politics and has never given place to violence in political activities.

The minister also said that VCK and DMK have had political relations for a long time. He said that he does not understand the reason for the anger or dissatisfaction of some DMK leaders.

Vanniarasu also reiterated his party’s opposition to the Mekedatu Dam project in Karnataka. He said that this project is against the farmers and the Tamil Nadu government should call an all-party meeting on this issue.

On the questions being raised regarding law and order, he said that the new government should be given some time to completely handle and stabilize the situation. He also reiterated the demand for taking strict steps to protect the oppressed communities, for the police to work irrespective of caste and religion and to enact a separate law to stop honor killings.
