There has been a political fierce battle regarding the special intensive revision being run by the Election Commission in Bihar. Opposition parties are constantly accusing the Commission of removing the names of voters from the list. Even several petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court on this issue. But apart from the dispute, now the SIR process will be run to remove fake voters from the list across the country. The Election Commission has already announced this. Preparations have also started in the capital Delhi.
Preparations for SIR started in Delhi
The office of Delhi’s Chief Electoral Officer has given a new update on the SIR process in the capital. The 2002 voter list has been considered as the basis for this process in Delhi. For revision from this year, the voter list of SIR in Delhi in 2002 has also been shared on the website as per the current assembly seats. Election Commission employees and booth level officials are also being trained for SIR in Delhi. Delhi Election Commission officials are also working to reorganize polling stations and improve records.
All the important instructions given by the Supreme Court regarding SIR in Bihar will also apply to other states of the country including Delhi. The court said in its recent comment that Aadhaar should be added as 12th document in the SIR process. Opposition parties in Bihar objected to not including Aadhaar in the list of 11 documents. Also, the court has said that if any error is found in this process, it will cancel the entire revision process going on in Bihar.
2002 voter list made Aadhaar
In fact, SIR in Bihar started from June 2025, where the current voter list was matched with the old 2003 old voter list. Similarly, 2002 has been considered as the base year for Delhi. Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) said that ground preparations have started for SIR. It is a national level campaign, which is being done under the constitutional jurisdiction of the Election Commission. The purpose of this process is to remove the names of dead, duplicate or illegal migrants from the voter list.
Under this process in Delhi, booth level officer (BLO) will go door-to-door to distribute calculation forms. Subsequently, the first draft list will be published, after which people will be given time to register their objections or complaints. Voters whose names are in both 2002 and 2025 lists will only have to fill the form, no document verification will be required.
According to the Election Commission, more than 50 crore voters across the country will not require any additional document for the SIR process. This is because his names are already recorded in the voter list. Voters born before 1 July 1987 will not require any type of document.
According to the Commission, more than half of the country’s voters will come under this purview, which will not need to submit any documents for SIR. Because his name will be included in the voter list of the last special intensive revision held in the respective state. The final revision of the voter list in most states took place between 2002 and 2008, which would be considered the final year for this process.
What documents will be required?
For those who have to give documents for verification in Delhi, 12 documents like Bihar will be acceptable. Of these, the list of 11 documents has already been released by the Election Commission. Following the direction of the Supreme Court, now Aadhaar will be considered as the 12th document. But Aadhaar will be considered only an identity card, this is not the proof of citizenship at all.
These documents will include identification proof, address proof of address and documents related to citizenship proof. To prove identity, documents like Aadhaar card, voter identity card, passport, driving license, PAN card, residence certificate, ration card, electricity/water/gas bill, bank passbook, MNREGA card and voter key 2002 will be required. Similarly, documents like birth certificate, school leaving certificate, proof of parents’ name in 2002 voter list will be necessary to prove citizenship.
In Delhi, people whose names are in the 2002 list will only have to submit a printout of the calculation form and the 2002 list with it. No other document will be required. If the name of a voter is not in the 2002 voter list, but his parents are in this list, he will have to submit an identity card with the calculation letter and proof of his parents’ name in the 2002 list.
