Making a major election announcement on Monday, Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav said that if the SP government is formed in the state in 2027, consumers will be given up to 300 units of free electricity, while women will be given an annual pension of ₹40,000.
He launched a scathing attack on the government on issues related to electricity, health care and inflation. Addressing party workers gathered from various districts—including the Bundelkhand region—at the party headquarters in Lucknow, Akhilesh Yadav said the people of the state were suffering from poor health services and acute shortage of fertilizers. He alleged that consumers are being exploited in the name of “smart meters”, and there is arbitrary and irregular increase in electricity bills.
The SP chief stressed that public anger is increasing against the fraudulent acts of electricity billing being done through smart meters. He further alleged that under the current government, companies have to pay upfront commission even before getting the contract—which is later compensated by charging increased electricity bills from consumers.
Expensive electricity and gas cylinders will ‘break BJP’s relationship with power’
Taking a dig at the BJP, Akhilesh Yadav said electricity meters too, like electronic voting machines (EVMs), are being “manipulated”, and the public has now fully understood the reality of the system. He declared that high prices of electricity and gas cylinders would ultimately “sever BJP’s relationship” with political power. Citing the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he stressed the need to formulate a strategy to win maximum seats in the upcoming 2027 assembly elections as well. Calling for unity in efforts to defeat BJP, he stressed that a strong and concrete strategy should be implemented to ensure victory in every single assembly constituency.
Describing the present government as fundamentally opposed to both democracy and the Constitution, he said the state’s health, education and power infrastructure has completely collapsed. He promised that if the SP government is formed, the rule of law will be restored, and justice will be provided to people from all sections of the society. He also accused the BJP of trying to tarnish the image of the socialists, and asserted that—even if they rely on misleading propaganda—none of the BJP’s political moves will succeed. Concluding his speech, he said that the people of the state are fed up with the BJP rule and now want change. He said that inflation and corruption are at their peak, the situation regarding women’s safety is worrying, and the public has lost faith in BJP.
