Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday strongly criticized the government’s handling of the ongoing conflict in West Asia and India’s diplomatic stance, calling the recent developments a “serious blow” to the country.

He asserted that “For more than a year, it has been abundantly clear that despite our undeniable military successes in Operation Sindoor, the sad reality is that Pakistan’s diplomatic activism and strategic management thereafter has been far better than that of the Modi government. Pakistan, which was in a very fragile state politically, socially, economically and globally, has got a new lease of life.”
Ramesh underlined the growing cordiality between Islamabad and Washington, saying, “President Trump repeatedly warmly embraced the man whose inflammatory and provocative rhetoric formed the backdrop to the Pahalgam terror attacks on April 22, 2025, and he invited Field Marshal Asim Munir to the White House twice (including an unprecedented lunch). The Pakistani establishment has developed close ties with people close to President Trump. Are.”
Commenting on India’s diplomacy, he criticized the Prime Minister’s recent foreign trips and said, “Mr. Modi’s visit to Israel, which ended just two days before the start of the US and Israel’s unprovoked air strikes on Iran, will go down in our political history as an extremely disastrous choice – a choice that forced us to step back from a position where we could and should have mediated.”
He further said, “The crookedness of the Prime Minister has been exposed. The country is having to pay the price for it.”
Meanwhile, US White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt said nothing concrete can be said at the moment on reports claiming that US Vice President JD Vance, US Presidential Special Envoy for Peacekeeping Mission Steve Witkoff and businessman and former senior advisor to the President of the United States Jared Kushner will meet Iranian officials in Islamabad.
Responding to a query from ANI, Leavitt said it should not be considered final until it is formally announced by the White House.
Leavitt responded, “These are sensitive diplomatic discussions, and the US will not negotiate through the press. This is a changing situation, and speculation about the meetings should not be considered final until they are formally announced by the White House.”
The Mediator countries are trying to arrange a meeting between the US and Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, possibly by the end of the week, The Times of Israel quoted an unnamed Israeli official as saying.
Meanwhile, US Home Secretary Doug Burgum said he has full confidence in Trump’s alleged contacts with Iran.
