BJP has won a landslide victory in the 2026 municipal elections. BJP wrested control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from Uddhav Thackeray by winning 1,425 out of 2,869 seats in 29 municipal corporations, ending his family’s three-decade-long dominance of the wealthy civic body.
In the 227-member BMC, BJP won 89 seats, while ally Shiv Sena won 29 seats. Whereas, Shiv Sena (UBT) got 65 seats and MNS got six seats. Congress, which contested the elections in alliance with Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), got 24 seats, AIMIM 8, NCP 3, Samajwadi Party 2 and NCP (SP) only one seat.
In the Pune elections, the saffron party surprised the Pawar family by winning 119 seats, while Ajit Pawar-led NCP came second with 27 seats and its ally NCP (SP) got three seats, while Congress could get only 15 seats.
Among the 151 members of Nagpur Municipal Corporation, BJP dominated and got 102 seats, while Congress got only 34 seats.
In Nashik, BJP got 72 seats, Shiv Sena 26, Shiv Sena (UBT) 15, Congress 3 and NCP 4.
The BJP’s winning streak continued in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where it won 57 seats, followed by Shiv Sena with 13 and Congress with one seat, while other parties registered with the SEC, especially AIMIM, secured 33 seats.
As per the final vote count, BJP won 1,425 seats out of total 2,869 seats, Shiv Sena 399, Congress 324, NCP 167, Shiv Sena (UBT) 155, NCP (SP) 36, MNS 13, BSP 6, parties registered with SEC 129, unrecognized parties 196 and 19 independent candidates won.
Elections were held in the following municipal corporations: Mumbai, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Solapur, Amravati, Akola, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Ulhasnagar, Thane, Chandrapur, Parbhani, Mira-Bhayander, Nanded-Waghala, Panvel, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Latur, Malegaon, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar, Dhule, Jalna and Ichalkaranji.
