Kolkata, May 12 (IANS). The West Bengal government on Tuesday directed the police to register an FIR in connection with the morning fire incident in East Kolkata’s Tiljala area. Two people lost their lives in this incident.
The state government has also constituted a committee to conduct a detailed survey of the fire site and submit the report by Wednesday morning.
“2 people died and 5 people sustained serious burn injuries in the fire. In view of the huge loss of life and property caused by this incident, Kolkata Police is directed to immediately register a specific FIR in this matter,” the order issued by the government said.
The order further said, “Furthermore, a departmental committee consisting of the following officers is constituted to conduct a detailed survey of the incident site and examine all relevant documents relating to the incident. The committee will conduct detailed investigation and survey and submit the report to the undersigned by 11:00 am on May 13.”
It is noteworthy that on Tuesday afternoon, two people died in a fire in a multi-storey building on GJ Khan Road in Tiljala area of East Kolkata, while five people got burnt and are undergoing treatment in the hospital.
According to local people, the fire broke out on the second floor of the four-storey building located at 50/1 GJ Khan Road. The fire spread quickly and soon black smoke was everywhere. People immediately informed the fire department. Four fire engines reached the spot one by one.
The fire was so severe that seven people present in the room were trapped at that time. It is said that everyone had taken shelter in the bathroom to save their lives. However, even there a situation like suffocation arose due to black smoke. Firefighters tried their best to save them, but it was not possible. Later all the people were rescued in burnt condition and sent to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. Doctors examined them and declared two of them dead.
According to the fire department, both died due to severe breathing problems. The condition of the remaining five people is also critical. There are fears that the death toll may increase. However, the cause of the fire is not yet clear.
