Chennai, 24 December (IANS). The Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a scathing attack on Viduthalai Chiruthigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol Thirumavalavan. The BJP has alleged that he has mortgaged his party to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in exchange for limited electoral gains.
BJP spokesperson ANS Prasad said that the VCK has no independent ideological identity or statewide political vision.
He alleged that Thirumavalavan’s continued alliance with the DMK is contrary to the basic principles under which the VCK was established to protect the rights of the Scheduled Castes.
Referring to the recent Christmas celebrations in Chennai, Prasad accused the VCK leader of ‘opportunistic minority appeasement’. He said that Thirumavalavan avoided speaking on Christianity, while at the same time criticizing Hindu religious symbols and organizations such as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
The BJP leader said such actions reflect divisive politics aimed at consolidating vote banks rather than promoting social harmony.
The statement further alleged that Thirumavalavan has failed to raise voice on several incidents involving Dalits in Tamil Nadu, including cases of violence, alleged atrocities and neglect of infrastructure in government schools and hostels.
Highlighting the financial data, the BJP spokesperson claimed that substantial funds allocated by the Center for Scheduled Caste welfare under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP) either remained unused or were misused by the state government.
Citing data from recent years, he argued that despite the allocations made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure, welfare outcomes at the ground level remained inadequate.
Prasad also accused Thirumavalavan of playing the role of mediator in political talks on behalf of the DMK and publicly criticizing other parties, which he described as “political theatrics”.
He concluded by saying that if the VCK no longer intends to function independently, it should “openly merge” into the DMK rather than continue to make a show of social justice politics.
