Truck hits bike rider in Gopeshwar, Chamoli, youth dies on the spot

Chamoli, July 15 (IANS). A youth riding a bike died after being hit by a speeding truck in Gopeshwar, the headquarters of Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Police have arrested the truck driver and started investigating the case.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Mukesh Negi s/o Kalam Singh, resident of Near Law College, Gopeshwar. The accident happened at Leesa Factory bypass turn. The time of the accident is said to be late Tuesday night.

On receiving the information, the police reached the spot, where the youth was badly trapped under the truck along with the bike. With the help of JCB, he was taken out and taken to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the truck driver was going towards Gopeshwar at a high speed, hitting several vehicles parked on the roadside near Gavilo village. During this time, the police tried to stop him near Patialdhar police post, but the driver broke the barricade and moved ahead. After this, the truck hit Mukesh Negi’s bike at the Leesa Factory bypass turn.

Police said that the truck driver has been arrested after the incident and the matter is being investigated from all aspects.

After the accident, the family members of the deceased have demanded strict action against the accused driver. There is anger among the local people regarding the incident. They allege that due to lack of effective control on speeding trucks carrying mining material, road accidents are happening every day in the area. Local people say that if the truck had been stopped in time, the accident could have been avoided.

Local people have demanded a fair and thorough investigation into the matter and strict action against speeding and heavy vehicles violating traffic rules. A large number of local people including Rajendra Negi, Vineet Menthani, Dinesh Negi, Jaideep were present at the spot.

Local people say that such accidents have happened many times before but till date the police and administration are not paying any attention.
