Kolkata, June 18 (IANS). With an aim to modernize the functioning of West Bengal Police, the state police on Wednesday signed an MoU with the National Defense University, functioning under the Union Home Ministry.

The agreement was signed in the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at the State Secretariat Nabanna.

With this, West Bengal has joined the list of states which have already signed such agreements with the National Defense University like states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Assam.

On this occasion, Chief Minister Adhikari said that even though the efficiency of the state police was at its peak earlier and was in line with international standards, the former Mamata Banerjee government did not utilize this capacity in the interest of the public.

He said that the modern equipment required to increase the efficiency of the police was not made available earlier and due to less number of personnel in the force, the police could not live up to the expectations of the public.

“Arrangements are being made to bring transparency in recruitment and recruit more policemen,” he said.

Under this agreement, training will be given to police officers at all levels of the state.

The Chief Minister said that the training will focus on modern crimes like cyber crime, dark web, use of Artificial Intelligence and human trafficking. Besides, crime investigation capabilities like forensic science and border intelligence will also be strengthened.

He said that his main objective is to modernize the state police force so that they do not have to depend on the Central Armed Police Forces in serious matters related to law and order.

The Chief Minister said that since assuming charge, he has been emphasizing on making the state police function impartially and establish ‘rule of law’ and not ‘rule of the ruler’.
