Ranchi, May 15 (IANS). The Central Government has approved increasing the number of MBBS seats in two government medical colleges of Jharkhand. According to the official information given by the state health department, the number of MBBS seats in Dhanbad-based Shaheed Nirmal Mahato Medical College and Hospital (SNMCH) has been increased from 100 to 250. That means 150 new seats will be added here.
At the same time, approval has been given to increase seats in MGM Medical College, Jamshedpur. However, the department has not released the detailed details of the number of seats increased here. According to the government, after the expansion of medical seats, the Central Government has approved Rs 225 crore for the increased expenditure on medical education. The central government’s share in this will be Rs 135 crore. The state government will now send this proposal to the Cabinet for approval. It was also informed by the Health Department that the increase in Post Graduate (PG) seats in medical colleges has also been approved. This is likely to increase the number of specialist doctors in the state.
The department says that this will have a direct impact on the health services of government hospitals, especially in rural and remote areas. Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari said that Jharkhand was struggling with the problem of shortage of doctors and medical seats for a long time. With the increase in seats, students of the state will have to depend less on other states for medical education.
Additional Chief Secretary of the department, Ajay Kumar Singh said that work is being done to increase seats in other government medical colleges also. There are also plans to increase super specialty seats in the future. Health department officials say that on one hand, with the expansion of medical education, students will get more opportunities, on the other hand, due to increase in the availability of doctors in the state, patients are also expected to get better treatment.
