Betul, May 16 (IANS). Earthquake tremors were felt in Betul district of Madhya Pradesh on Saturday night. The intensity of this earthquake, which occurred at 9:31 pm 2 seconds, was measured at 3.9 on the Richter scale. People panicked as soon as they felt the tremors of the earthquake. According to the information, the epicenter of the earthquake was Betul district, which is said to be located about 68 kilometers south-southeast of Pachmarhi. Its impact was also felt in the areas bordering Betul and Chhindwara districts.
The depth of the earthquake was recorded at about 10 kilometers below the ground, making the tremors felt close to the surface. At present, no loss of life or property has been reported. The coordinates of the earthquake have been recorded as follows. The latitude is 21.907 and the longitude is 78.716. India’s seismic zoning system was updated in 2025, expanding the classification to 6 zones based on earthquake probability.
According to seismologists, our earth’s surface is mainly made up of seven large and many small tectonic plates. These plates keep moving continuously and often collide with each other. This collision may result in the corners of the plates bending and may even break due to the excessive pressure. In such a situation, the energy coming out from below finds a way to spread outwards and when this energy comes out from inside the ground, an earthquake occurs.
