MP UCC Bill Passed: Madhya Pradesh Assembly on Monday passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill by voice vote. Amidst the loud uproar and sloganeering by the opposition, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, while presenting the government’s side in the House, said that the state is now taking historic steps in the direction of “One Constitution, One Law”. He said that the purpose of the Uniform Civil Code is not to target any particular religion, but to give equal rights and equal legal protection to all citizens.
In his speech, the Chief Minister said, “From Ram to Rahim, from Ravindra to Robin, from Amar to Anthony and Akbar, the country was governed by one Constitution.” Accusing the Congress of appeasement politics, he said that if the opposition really respects the Constitution of Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar then it should support this bill.
Major provisions of the UCC Bill:
1. Strict rules on live-in of married person
According to Hindustan Times, the most talked about provision of the new law is related to live-in relationships of married persons. If a married person remains in a live-in relationship with someone else after marriage and violates the provisions of the law, he can face a maximum of 5 years in jail and a fine.
2. Registration of live-in relationship mandatory
According to Akashvani News, according to the bill, couples in live-in relationships will have to register themselves within a month. There is a provision for legal action if registration is not done within the stipulated time or if wrong information is given.
3. Complete ban on polygamy
According to The Week, no more than one marriage will be allowed under the new system. The principle of one husband-one wife will apply to all citizens.
4. Ban on Triple Talaq and Nikah Halala
According to the organizer, the bill also has a provision to ban practices like instant triple talaq and Nikah Halala.
5. Equal inheritance between son and daughter
According to Akashvani News, women and men have been given equal rights in matters of property and inheritance. Both son and daughter will get equal rights.
6. Registration of marriage is mandatory
According to Akashvani News, registration of all marriages taking place in the state will be mandatory to ensure transparency in marriage related disputes and legal processes.
7. Uniform legal procedure for divorce
According to Akashvani News, a provision has been made to implement a uniform legal procedure for divorce instead of separate personal laws based on religion.
8. Exemption to Scheduled Tribes
Under the bill, Scheduled Tribe communities have been kept out of the scope of UCC so that their traditional culture and customs can be protected.
CM Mohan Yadav attacked the opposition
Taking aim at the Congress, the Chief Minister said that “Congress has different teeth for eating and different teeth for showing.” He alleged that Congress continued to do vote bank politics for years and worked to divide the society on the basis of different laws. He said that now there will be no separate civil laws for any religion in Madhya Pradesh and all citizens will get equal legal rights.
In which states UCC is being implemented?
Madhya Pradesh has become the first state in the country to take steps towards implementing UCC. Earlier, UCC has been implemented in Uttarakhand, while Gujarat and Assam have also taken important initiatives towards Uniform Civil Code.
