While extending hearty congratulations and best wishes to everyone on World Environment Day, the Chief Minister said that the beautiful lake here, the greenery spread all around, the amazing range of mountains and the unique beauty of nature not only make us feel happy, but also remind us that nature and environment are our present as well as future. Therefore, it is the responsibility of all of us to preserve and protect this nature and environment. He said that today is not only a day for planting saplings or carrying out formal programmes, but also a day for introspection. Today is an opportunity to ask ourselves what kind of earth, environment and future we want to hand over to our children and future generations, will we give them clean rivers, lush green forests and pure environment, or will we give them a future full of pollution, water crisis and environmental challenges.
The Chief Minister said that what should be the environment of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand is an important question for all of us. Because good environment is not only our identity but also the basis of our culture, faith and life. He said that we are residents of that sacred land from where life-giving rivers like Mother Ganga and Yamuna originate. Where the Himalayas are not just mountains but are the sentinels of our civilization and we are the bearers of that culture which revered nature thousands of years ago and gave the message of co-existence with nature to the entire world.
The Chief Minister said that the environmental protection that the world is talking about today has been a part of our culture for thousands of years. We called rivers as mothers, considered trees as gods, considered mountains as worshipable and considered nature as the basis of life. He considered the climate change happening in the world as a big challenge and said that climate change is no longer a topic of discussion only for scientists.
This has become the reality of our everyday life. Changing weather, rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, drying water sources, melting glaciers and increasing natural disasters are constantly warning us. Due to climate change, our water sources are being affected, our agriculture is being affected, our biodiversity is being affected and at the same time tourism, the mainstay of our state’s economy, is also being affected. Therefore environmental protection is very important for us.
The Chief Minister said that under the leadership of the Prime Minister, India has worked to give a new direction to the world. He has given this message to the whole world that development and environment are not opposed to each other. With this thinking, India is moving forward with the mantra of nature as well as progress. Through Mission Life, the Prime Minister gave this message to the world that environmental protection is not the responsibility of governments alone. When crores of people start making small changes in their lives, then big changes automatically become possible. The Chief Minister said that the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign started by the Prime Minister is also not just a government program. Rather, it is a mass movement linked to emotions.
On this occasion, the Chief Minister urged every family of the state to plant a sapling in the name of their mother and turn it into a tree. He said that when the whole world was talking about protecting the forests, the mother power of Uttarakhand had created history through the Chipko movement. Gaura Devi and the mothers and sisters here had given the message to the world that there is no greater power than people’s power to protect nature. Today again there is a need to awaken the same feeling. Today again we have to make environmental protection a mass movement.
He said that many important works are being done by the government in the field of water conservation, rejuvenation of water sources, river conservation, afforestation, wildlife conservation and green energy in the state. Uttarakhand is the first state in the country to implement the concept of gross environmental product. This is not just a policy, but a reflection of better thinking. Which shows that forests, water and biodiversity are as important for us as economic progress. The government has a clear resolve that there will be development as well as environmental protection. He appealed to the people of the state to cooperate with the government in saving forests from fire to prevent incidents of forest fire. Wherever even a small spark of fire is seen, inform immediately. A little caution can save the lives of thousands of trees and many animals.
In his address, the Chief Minister said that the aim of the government is to bring development to the last person. He said that considering the geographical location of Nainital district, education, health and road connectivity are the top priorities of the government.
On this occasion, Cabinet Minister Shri Ram Singh Kaida, while welcoming and expressing his gratitude to the Chief Minister, mentioned about various schemes and development works going on under Bhimtal assembly constituency and gave information about the public welfare policies and schemes of the government.
