FIFA World Cup History Wiki in Hindi: When we look at the FIFA World Cup today, we see an event standing in front of us which is called the world’s biggest sporting extravaganza. Billions of spectators, billions of dollars in business, the world’s biggest players, huge stadiums and global excitement that lasts for months. But the story wasn’t always like this. There was a time when football’s World Cup was just a bold idea. An idea that many people did not believe in. Many countries thought that teams from different continents would never be able to play together. It was considered almost impossible to organize the competition across the oceans. Yet some people dreamed of making football truly the world game. The name of that dream today is ‘FIFA World Cup’. This was the period when the world was recovering from the wounds of the First World War. Sports was the only medium that could bring countries closer. FIFA took this idea forward.

Football was becoming increasingly popular in the last years of the nineteenth century. This game, which started from England, had spread to Europe, South America and many parts of the world. National competitions started being organized in different countries. International matches were also being played. But there was no competition that could decide who was the best football team in the world. In the year 1904, ‘Federation Internationale de Football Association’ i.e. ‘FIFA’ was established in Paris. The purpose of FIFA was to organize football at the international level. In the beginning the organization was small, resources were limited and influence was not very widespread. Yet its founders had a bigger goal in mind – a world-class football event. Robert Guerin of France became the first president of FIFA. He was the first to draw the blueprint for the World Cup. But then the plan could not get off the ground due to financial constraints.

Football competition started being organized in the Olympic Games in the early years of the twentieth century. Football gained popularity in the 1908 and 1912 Olympics. After this, football achieved unprecedented success in the Olympic Games of 1920, 1924 and 1928. In particular, the South American country Uruguay shocked the entire world by winning gold medals in both the 1924 and 1928 Olympics. The Uruguayan team was considered fast, technically proficient and extremely disciplined. European audiences realized for the first time that football was no longer just Europe’s game. European countries were surprised by this magical success of Uruguay. They were not able to understand his passing game technique. It was from here that the real football war between the continents began.

At the same time, the idea began to strengthen within FIFA that an independent World Cup competition should be organized separate from the Olympics. The biggest supporter of this idea was ‘Jules Rimé’, the third president of FIFA. This visionary administrator of France believed that football could become a medium of friendship and communication between different countries. He wanted the world’s best players not just amateurs. But can also compete at the professional level. There were many restrictions in Olympic competitions at that time. There were controversies regarding the participation of professional players. Therefore the need for an independent tournament was felt. Jules Rimé made diplomatic efforts for years for this. He advocated keeping football separate from politics. Ultimately his unwavering faith bore fruit.

The historic decision was taken at the FIFA Congress held in Amsterdam in 1928. FIFA accepted the proposal to organize the World Football Championship. Now the question was in which country the first World Cup should be organized. Many countries showed interest. But ultimately Uruguay got the hosting rights. There were many reasons behind this. First, Uruguay was the world’s strongest football power at the time. Second, he had won two consecutive Olympic gold medals. Third, the year 1930 was the centenary of Uruguay’s independence and the government wanted to celebrate the occasion grandly. Uruguay also offered to cover the travel and accommodation expenses of all participating teams. At that time this proposal was considered very attractive. Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and Sweden also staked claim to host. But all withdrew their names in the face of Uruguay’s financial promises.

But even after the World Cup was decided, the problems did not end. Europe was going through an economic crisis at that time. The sea voyage was long and expensive. Aviation services were not developed. It took several weeks to reach South America from Europe. Many European football associations refused to undertake such a long journey. Some countries were worried about the jobs and business of their players. Some were facing financial difficulties. As a result, there remained a fear till the last moment that the first World Cup might fail. The major football powers of Europe such as England, Germany and Italy boycotted the tournament completely. It was only after the personal intervention of Jules Rimé that four European teams were created.

Ultimately only thirteen countries decided to participate. These included seven South American countries, four European countries and two North American countries. By today’s standards this number may seem very small. But at that time it was a historic achievement. People from France, Belgium, Romania and Yugoslavia arrived in Uruguay by sea from Europe. It is said that the players’ journey itself was no less than an exciting expedition. After being at sea for several weeks, they reached Montevideo and were ready to create history. The European teams traveled on a ship named ‘SS Conte Verde’. FIFA President Jules Rimé and the valuable World Cup trophy were also present on the same ship. Players used to practice on the deck of the ship itself.

The first FIFA World Cup started on July 13, 1930. The first two matches in World Cup history were played on the same day. France defeated Mexico and the United States defeated Belgium. France’s ‘Lucien Laurent’ scored the first goal in World Cup history. At that time, hardly anyone would have thought that this goal would later be counted among the most important events in sports history. Laurent scored this historic goal through a volley in the 19th minute of the match. Only four thousand spectators came to watch this match played in snowy weather.

The center of the entire tournament was Montevideo’s ‘Estadio Centenario’ stadium. This stadium was specially built for the World Cup. However, the construction work could not be completed on time and the initial matches had to be held at other grounds. Later, when the Centenario was completed, it gained the distinction of becoming the first great theater of world football. Even today it is counted among the most prestigious stadiums in football history. Due to heavy rain and shortage of labour, the stadium could not be ready until five days after its inauguration. The stadium also symbolized 100 years of the Uruguayan Constitution.

Uruguay and Argentina were considered the strongest contenders in the tournament. The football rivalry between the two countries was already well known. On the other hand, America and Yugoslavia also performed brilliantly and made it to the semi-finals. But ultimately what was most likely happened. Uruguay and Argentina were face to face in the final. The whole of South America was watching this match with bated breath. Both the teams had performed one-sidedly in the semi-final matches. Uruguay defeated Yugoslavia and Argentina defeated America by the same margin 6-1.

The final played on July 30, 1930 is counted among the most important matches in world football history. The stadium was packed with spectators. There was tension in the atmosphere along with excitement. Argentina took the lead in the first half and it looked like they were going to become the first world champions. But Uruguay made a brilliant comeback in the second half. His players played aggressively and eventually won 4-2. The whole of Montevideo went into celebration as the final whistle blew. Uruguay had become the world’s first FIFA World Cup winner. There was a strange dispute regarding the ball in this match. Both teams wanted to play with their own balls. Ultimately FIFA decided that Argentina’s ball would be used in the first half and Uruguay’s ball in the second half. Playing with their ball, Uruguay scored three goals in the second half.

The importance of this victory was not limited to sports only. Uruguay was a small country whose population was less than that of many European countries. Yet he showed the whole world that talent and organization do not depend on the size of a country. By winning the first World Cup trophy, it added a golden chapter to its national history. The original name of this trophy was ‘Victory’, which was later renamed in honor of Jules Rimé. The day after the victory was declared a national holiday throughout Uruguay.

The success of the first World Cup turned FIFA’s dream into reality. It was now proven that a world-class football competition was possible. Although the number of participating countries was limited, broadcasting technology was in its infancy, and the means of delivering information to audiences were limited, the event set the tone for the future. The world realized that football has the amazing power to unite nations.

The 1930 World Cup laid the foundation of many traditions. National pride, global competition, the rise of football heroes, the passion of spectators and the prestige of the World Cup — it all started here. Later, Brazil, Italy, Germany, Argentina and other countries took this competition to new heights. Great players like Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Zidane and Messi immortalized the World Cup. But if Uruguay had not taken that risk in 1930, if Jules Rimé had not seen that dream and if thirteen countries had not dared to cross the ocean, today’s World Cup might never have come into existence.

Today, when 48 teams are going to participate in the World Cup, when billions of people watch every match on mobile and television, when the entire world’s reactions to a single goal are seen in a few seconds, then it is important to remember that the seed of this huge tree was sown on the soil of Montevideo. The 1930 World Cup was not just a tournament. That was the victory of an idea. That was the victory of faith. He was a testament to the fact that sport can be bigger than boundaries.

The great saga of the FIFA World Cup began there – Uruguay 1930. And that beginning still remains the most inspiring story in world football.
