Madrid, June 2 (IANS). Goalkeeper David Soria has signed a 4-year contract with Getafe CF, under which he will remain at the club until the end of June 2030. The 33-year-old Soria has played 301 matches for the club, including 189 consecutive matches for the first-team in La Liga. Announcing his new contract, Getafe said that Soria has established himself as an important player both on and off the field due to his performances, leadership and commitment.
According to ‘Xinhua’ report, Getafe conceded only 38 goals last season, which was the best figure after FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. The team, coached by Jose Bordalas, performed brilliantly in the second half of the season, finishing seventh in La Liga and qualifying for next season’s Conference League.
“David Soria’s contract renewal is very good news for our club, both today and tomorrow,” the club said in a statement. “Our club will continue to have a top-level goalkeeper and an excellent professional player.” Bordalás has not yet renewed his contract with Getafe, while key players Luis and Mauro Arambarri are expected to leave the club. Arambari is expected to join River Plate, while Luis is being linked with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nasr.
Madrid-born Soria finished his youth career with Real Madrid. When the Spanish giants released him, he moved to England and had a trial at Leicester City. But, due to injury on the very first day, Leicester City let him go. After this, due to salary cap, Birmingham City also released him after six weeks. Frustrated by all this, he left his trial at Stoke City midway. He returned to Spain, and after failing to make appearances at Real Betis B and Sporting de Gijón and failing to make his debut at CD Canillas, Soria finally joined Sevilla FC in January 2013.
After debuting with the C team in Tercera División, he gradually managed to earn a place in the main team in 2014–15. Manager Unai Emery gave him his debut on 2 December; This was a 3–0 victory against UD Logroños in the Copa del Rey last 32 tie. He remained there until 2017, after which he joined Getafe in July 2018, where he remains ever since.
