
Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026: India’s star weightlifter and Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu created history at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 by winning the gold medal for the third consecutive time in the women’s 48 kg weight category. Chanu won the gold medal by lifting a total weight of 190 kg (snatch 85 kg + clean and jerk 105 kg) and completed a hat-trick of gold medals in the Commonwealth Games.
This is Chanu’s fourth medal in the Commonwealth Games. Earlier, he had won silver medals in 2014, while gold medals in 2018 and 2022.
New Commonwealth Games record made in snatch
Mirabai Chanu’s debut was not as expected. His first attempt at snatch was unsuccessful, but in the second attempt he successfully lifted 82 kg. In the third attempt, he created a new Commonwealth Games record by lifting 85 kg and took the lead.
Champion’s return seen in clean and jerk also
Chanu’s first attempt in clean and jerk also failed. However, he made a brilliant comeback and lifted 105 kg in the second attempt and almost ensured the gold medal. She topped the competition with a total of 190 kg.
Nigeria and Malaysia got silver and bronze
In the women’s 48 kg category, NYONG Ruth Asuquo of Nigeria won the silver medal with a total lift of 168 kg, while HENRY Irene Jane of Malaysia won the bronze medal with a total lift of 167 kg.
