India vs pak: Today, the important match of Asia Cup 2025 is to be played between India and Pakistan at Dubai International Stadium. While the players are in full preparation on the field, there is a huge outrage and protests in India. Some people say that playing matches against Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack is playing with the family members of the martyrs and the sentiments of the country. In such a situation, the question arises whether India can boycott this match and what are the examples in history when a team denied the game in a competition?

History of Boycott: Examples of Soviet Union

Sometimes sports and politics collide. For example, the Soviet Union also decided not to take part in the Olympic Games for political reasons or not.

1980 Moscow Olympics and Soviet Union’s contribution

The Olympic Games were held in 1980 at Moscow, Soviet Union. It was the first and only Olympics that was organized by USSR itself. At that time, the Soviet Union attacked Afghanistan, due to which the US and 65 other countries boycot the Moscow Olympics. Despite this, the Soviet Union participated in this Olympics and considered it an opportunity to show its political and sports influence.

1984 Los Angeles Olympics and Soviet Union boycott

Olympics were held in Los Angeles, USA in 1984. This time the Soviet Union said that the safety of their players is not sure, so they refused to participate in this Olympics. Apart from the Soviet Union, about 14 eastern block countries also boycotted the Olympics. As a result, the US won several medals on the basis of domestic players and the impact of sports and politics was clearly seen in this Olympics.

Boycott in terms of India-Pakistan match

It is clear from the historical example that big countries can decide not to participate in sports for political reasons. But the case of cricket match between India and Pakistan is slightly different. There is no political international pressure in cricket like the Olympics. According to ICC rules, if a team suddenly refuses the match, it may have to suffer financial and competition related losses. A large part of cricket and fans in India want the match to be played. Boycotting the match will send a political message, but the popularity of cricket and the morale of the players of the country will be affected. India’s player and coach Gautam Gambhir is fully focusing on the match. Players are preparing to win on the field by staying separate from political issues.
