The disgruntled G-23 leaders of the Congress party met for the second time within 24 hours on Thursday. A meeting of these G-23 leaders was also held on Wednesday night. Both the meetings took place at the residence of group leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. The demand for a change of leadership has once again intensified in the Congress, which had a disappointing performance in the recently concluded assembly elections. After the defeat, the leaders of G-23 have once again intensified the attack on the party regarding the change of leadership.
The second meeting of G-23 group leaders included Kapil Sibal, Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Anand Sharma. Hooda had met former Congress President Rahul Gandhi earlier in the day. After this she also met G-23 leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. “We believe that the only way forward for the Congress is to adopt a system of collective and inclusive leadership and take decisions at every level,” a statement issued after the G-23 group leaders meeting on Wednesday said.
Speaking about the humiliating defeat in the elections in five states, Kapil Sibal on Tuesday had advocated the Gandhi family to be separated from the leadership of the party. He said that this is the right time when the Gandhi family should step away from the leadership of the Congress and give a chance to someone else for the leadership role.
Kapil Sibal criticized the party’s decision to hold a brainstorming session. He said the leadership was living in “Kuku Land” if it was not even aware of the reasons for the party’s downfall after eight years. G23 leaders had demanded major changes in the party to Sonia Gandhi in 2020. He said that the Gandhi family should voluntarily move away, as the body nominated by them would never tell them that they should not continue the reins of power.
