New Delhi, 29 September (IANS). According to a study, simple blood tests can predict severe liver cirrhosis or cancer risk.
Researchers at the Carolinska Institute, Sweden, based on the study, claimed that cirrhosis and liver cancer can be detected if simple blood tests in primary care are adopted seriously.
Researcher record Strandberg of the medical department of the institute, which developed this test, said, “These are diseases that are becoming increasingly common and the results are very bad if they are detected late.”
“Our method can detect the risk of severe liver disease in 10 years and is based on three simple regular blood tests in 10 years,” Strandberg further said.
For this study published in The BMJ magazine, researchers evaluated how well the method of serious liver disease could estimate.
This model – core – was designed using advanced statistical methods and is based on five factors: age, gender, and three general liver enzymes (AST, ALT and GGT) levels, which are usually measured during regular health checkups.
“It is an important step towards facilitating early testing of liver disease in first aid,” said Hangstrom, assistant professor and chief investigator at the Department of Medicine of Carolinska Institute.
According to Hagstrom, the new study can help us further in the treatment of diseases by identifying the victims.
The study is based on data from over 480,000 people in Stockholm, who conducted health checkups between 1985 and 1996 and who were monitored for the next 30 years.
The team said that the ‘Core’ model proved to be highly accurate. In 88 percent of the cases, they were able to distinguish between people who had this disease or not.
