In Hollywood’s “Terminator” movies, we shuddered watching machines kill humans. But in March 2026, this science fiction has become a harsh and scary reality. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer just an innocent tool for writing work emails, creating photos or helping kids with their homework. In the recent war between the US and Iran, algorithms, not humans, are determining the path of missiles raining from the sky.

Amidst the increasing tension between the US, Israel and Iran, it is clearly visible for the first time how rapidly the role of Artificial Intelligence is increasing in modern warfare. If you have been following this war, you may have heard about Anthropic and OpenAI, which are indirectly involved in this big fight in the Middle East. We have added all the coverage related to cyber warfare in this article. You can read them by clicking on the link given below.

War is changing. The weapons are the same, but the brains are now machines

Military experts are now openly saying that in the coming years, wars will be fought not just with soldiers and weapons, but with the help of data, algorithms and machines. That is why the question is increasingly being raised around the world whether AI systems will replace humans in the future to make the most important decisions in war: who to kill and who to spare.

Drones, Satellites and Data: The Flood of Information in Modern Warfare

The style of war has changed rapidly in recent years. Earlier, it took hours, sometimes even days, to gather intelligence before a military operation. Analysts would watch drone footage, study satellite images, and then, after meetings at different levels, decide whether to attack or not. Today, the amount of data coming into the battlefield is almost impossible for humans alone to understand. A modern drone mission captures thousands of images and records hours of video.

Satellites continuously record ground activity. Sources like mobile location, communication data, surveillance cameras and internet activity have become an important source of information for intelligence agencies. This data is so large that critical information can often be missed if only human teams look at it. This is where AI entered the battle.

The United States was the first country to take a big step in this direction. In 2017, the US Department of Defense launched a program called Project Maven. The objective of this project was to understand videos from drones and surveillance cameras using artificial intelligence.

The AI was trained to identify vehicles, weapons or suspicious activity in videos. Previously, this work had to be done by a human analyst, and sometimes it was very difficult to find even one small thing in hours of footage. After Project Maven, AI systems started doing this work much faster. This made the US military understand the need for machine-based data analysis in future wars.

Gaza war and AI targeting system where machines started telling who to kill

But the use of AI was not limited to just understanding data. Gradually, this technology extended to target identification in war. The most controversial example of this occurred during the Gaza War. The Israeli military used AI systems like Lavender and Gospel in Gaza. Lavender analyzed a lot of data to identify people potentially associated with militant organizations. It combined phone records, social network connections, location data and surveillance information to create a risk score.

Gospel, on the other hand, analyzed buildings and targets and suggested locations that might be useful to the military. These technologies greatly speeded up the process of target identification. Whereas previously, a small number of targets were identified, the system now rapidly identifies new potential targets.

AI’s growing role in Middle East tensions

Meanwhile, rising tensions between the US, Israel and Iran in the Middle East have further fueled the debate. Recent reports suggest that the use of AI-based data analysis systems in US military operations is increasing rapidly. These systems can rapidly combine satellite data, drone video and intelligence to analyze potential military targets. AI has greatly speeded up the decision making process during war. Decisions that previously took hours or days can now be taken in minutes. That is why many military experts have started calling it “machine-speed warfare”, which means a war fought at the speed of a machine.

Ukraine war also shows the future of AI drones

The impact of AI is not limited to analysis and target identification. The Ukraine war also showed how quickly drone technology is changing. Both Ukraine and Russia have used drones extensively. In recent years, AI-based systems are being developed that can help drones identify targets. If radio signals are jammed and the drone loses contact with its operator, the AI can analyze camera images to identify targets. This technology is not completely autonomous yet, but it becomes clear that the role of machines will increase in the battlefield in the future.

If AI makes a mistake then who will be responsible for it?

The biggest concern about AI warfare is that machines are not always completely trustworthy. Artificial intelligence systems learn from data, and data often limits them. AI can also draw wrong conclusions if the data is incomplete or contains incorrect information. In the world of technology, it is associated with problems such as the illusion of AI. In case of war, such a mistake can be very serious as it can have a direct impact on human lives. This is why many scientists and human rights organizations are demanding that international rules be made before fully integrating AI into autonomous weapon systems.

The worldwide AI war race has begun

On the other hand, the logic of military strategists is different. He says that modern warfare involves so much information that it is almost impossible to understand it without AI. Without AI, the decision-making process would slow down significantly, which could increase military risks. According to him, AI is not meant to replace humans but to help them. However, critics question why armies around the world are investing so much in autonomous weapon systems if AI is just helping. That’s why many experts are now calling for a new global race, the AI arms race. The United States, China, Russia, Israel and many other countries are rapidly investing in military AI technology. Areas like drone swarm, autonomous tanks, AI-powered surveillance systems and machine-based warfare strategies are developing rapidly. If this race continues, the face of war may completely change in the coming years.

Will machines decide deaths in the future?

Throughout history, many technologies have changed the face of warfare. Gunpowder changed old-fashioned warfare. Nuclear weapons brought the world into a new era of power balance. Drones have made wars fought from a distance possible. But AI is perhaps the first technology that can change the decision-making process of war. If machines start specifying targets based on data, and humans are limited to giving final approval only, then the role of humans in war may gradually reduce.

And this is the question before the world today. Technology is advancing rapidly. AI has become more powerful than ever. But are humans ready to hand over their most dangerous power: war decisions to machines? Because if this happens, it could be the first time in history that not a soldier or a general, but an algorithm will decide who will live and who will die.
