New Delhi, April 14 (IANS). Artificial Intelligence (AI) will play a big role in furthering the discovery of medicines. This will help in achieving precision medicine and creating an innovation led healthcare ecosystem. This information was given by experts.

Leaders across pharma sectors emphasized on redefining processes rather than merely digitizing existing systems. He spoke about the growing importance of a strong data and technology base for widespread adoption of AI.

The first day of the 9th ‘India Pharma 2026’ saw four key plenary sessions that brought together policymakers, industry leaders, regulators and technology experts to chart the future of India’s pharmaceutical and life sciences ecosystem.

The inaugural session highlighted the urgent need to bridge the gap between policy objectives and ground implementation.

Manoj Joshi, Secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals, stressed the importance of industry-led models for R&D, strengthening the government laboratory network and bringing the regulatory model in line with European systems.

Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, Department of Health Research, said that while research funding has increased manifold over the years, the country still needs an India-based R&D model with market confidence in innovators and increased trust between industry and academia.

According to the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, the industry leaders stressed the need to enhance venture capital participation and co-financing mechanisms to promote research-based enterprises, strengthened industry-academia integration and underlined the importance of an integrated ecosystem to transform early-stage discoveries into global solutions.

The second session focused on creating a predictable, efficient and globally aligned regulatory framework.

Dr. Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi, Drugs Controller General of India, highlighted the importance of stakeholder consultation in shaping responsive regulatory systems.

The third plenary session explored the transformative potential of AI in the pharmaceutical value chain.

The fourth session focused on India’s growing role in the global Contract Research, Development and Manufacturing Organization (CRDMO) landscape.

The panel noted that India’s CRDMO industry, currently valued at around $8 billion, is growing at a strong pace of 10-12 per cent, reflecting strong global outsourcing demand.
